Windows and finishes

Fascia painting and uPVC fascia spraying are ways to change the visible roofline finish without replacing sound boards. Fascias run along the roof edge; soffits form the underside. Their condition, ventilation details and access need to be assessed before choosing a finish, because a colour change is not a repair for a defective roofline.

The existing Dual Finish surface-spraying service includes uPVC fascias and soffits alongside windows, doors and cladding. Based in Cranbrook near Exeter, the team works across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. This page explains the roofline-specific decisions: where the coating goes, what must remain clear, and how the colour relates to the rest of the elevation.

Start with the condition, not the colour

Look from a safe position for obvious loose sections, damaged boards or staining that appears linked to a leak. Do not climb to investigate. A finish can refresh the appearance of a sound surface, but it cannot make a loose board secure or resolve water entering from elsewhere.

At survey, identify which boards are uPVC and what other materials meet them. Roofline assemblies can include different surfaces, fixings and ventilation details. Agree the extent of the spraying only after their condition and suitability have been discussed; do not assume every surface beneath the roof is part of the same job.

Preparation on a roofline

The established spraying process begins with cleaning, surface preparation and masking before the coating is applied. At roof level, the surrounding details are different from a window: walls, roof edges, gutters and vents need to be considered alongside the boards themselves. Dirt and an existing finish must be assessed as part of preparation.

Discuss the boundaries of the work so there is no ambiguity about adjoining surfaces. A quote for fascias and soffits should identify the boards being finished and anything that is staying as it is. That matters particularly when gutters or decorative details have a different colour or cannot be included in the same coating specification.

Keep ventilation and water paths clear

Soffits can contain ventilation openings or separate vent details. A colour refresh should not be treated as permission to cover them. Point out visible vents during the survey and ask how they will be protected while the finish is applied.

Likewise, the roofline is not just a decorative border. Water paths, joints and adjoining gutters need to continue functioning. If a leak or damaged component is suspected, address it through the appropriate repair before spraying. Hiding a stain without resolving its cause is not a sound basis for an exterior refresh.

Choose a colour for the whole elevation

The spraying service offers RAL colour matching, so the roofline can be discussed alongside the windows and doors. A dark fascia makes a different outline from a pale one; compare the sample against the walls and roof rather than choosing from the name alone. Retained surfaces influence how the final colour reads.

If new windows are being fitted and other frames are staying, decide which elements should match exactly and which should remain separate. Record the colour reference and included faces in the written quote. Matching the roofline is an appearance decision, not a reason to replace windows that still operate well.

Access needs its own plan

Roofline work is above normal standing height, and the access arrangement belongs in the survey discussion. Extensions, porches, conservatories, gardens and narrow side paths can all affect how the relevant surface is reached. Explain any shared access or restrictions before the work is quoted.

Do not assume a bungalow eliminates every access issue, or that an upper-storey fascia can be approached from below without planning. Ask what equipment and clear working space the job requires. Keep vehicles, planting and household use in the discussion so the exterior work can be organised around the property.

Roofline spraying versus replacement

Spraying makes sense as a colour change for suitable, sound boards. Replacement or repair is a different decision where the assembly is defective. The survey should separate an appearance problem from a problem with the boards, joints or roof edge.

A coordinated project may include window or door spraying at the same time, but each surface still needs to be identified and assessed. Ask for a written scope rather than treating the whole exterior as one undifferentiated item. For new windows, discuss replacement separately; for retained sound frames, a shared colour can be considered with the roofline.

Questions people ask

Can uPVC fascias and soffits be sprayed?

They are included in the existing surface-spraying service, subject to assessment of the boards, finish and access.

Will spraying fix a leaking roofline?

No. Resolve leaks, loose components and other defects before considering a colour finish.

Can the roofline match my window colour?

Discuss a RAL reference and samples at survey, then record the surfaces and colour included in the quote.
