It is not automatically the right answer. The unit is heavier, so hardware and frame have to be rated for it, and the benefit only shows where the rest of the building envelope is good enough for the window to be the weak point. On a solid wall cottage with an uninsulated roof, the money buys more elsewhere first.

• The payback is poor where walls and loft are the real heat loss route
• Slim heritage sightlines and triple units rarely coexist on a period frontage
