What Do Window Energy Ratings Actually Mean?
The labels are marketing friendly. The numbers underneath are the ones worth reading.
Window energy ratings run from A++ down through the scale and are calculated from heat loss, solar gain and air leakage combined. They are useful for comparing similar products, and less useful once you start mixing materials and glass types.
The three numbers that decide how a window performs in your house are the U value, the g value and the quality of the installation.
U value: heat going out
U value measures heat loss, so lower is better. A single glazed Victorian window sits near 5.0. Building regulations for replacement windows currently expect around 1.4 for the whole window. Good modern double glazing lands between 1.2 and 1.4, and triple glazing can reach below 1.0.
g value: heat coming in
The g value is how much free solar heat the glass lets through. A high g value is welcome on a south facing Devon living room in winter and can be uncomfortable in a west facing conservatory in July. Specifying the same glass on every elevation is a missed opportunity.
The details that quietly matter

In the mild South West climate the payback on triple glazing is long, and the extra weight needs the right hardware. It earns its place on exposed high level plots, home offices and rooms where noise matters, and rarely elsewhere.
