Fitting is the short part. The honest answer to how long a window job takes is dominated by manufacture, and that varies hugely between a stock white uPVC casement and a bespoke painted hardwood sash.

Here is the timeline we work to, and what happens in your house on the day.

The timeline

  • Free survey and written quote: usually within a few days of your call
  • Technical re measure once you proceed: about a week
  • uPVC manufacture: roughly three to five weeks
  • Aluminium manufacture: roughly four to six weeks
  • Engineered timber manufacture: roughly eight to twelve weeks
  • Fitting: most homes are done in one to three days

On the day

A two person team typically fits four to six standard openings a day. Each window comes out, the opening is cleaned back and checked, the new frame is packed, levelled, fixed and sealed, then the sashes and glass go in and the hardware is adjusted.

We work room by room so the house is never fully open, and every opening we start is closed and weathertight before we leave that day.

Making good and mess

Internal plaster reveals usually need minor filling rather than replastering when the old frame comes out cleanly. Bays, rotten timber sub frames and rendered reveals can need more. We tell you at survey which openings look likely to need making good.

Floors are covered, old frames and glass are removed from site, and we sweep and vacuum as we go.

Spraying instead: a much shorter job

If the frames are sound, on site respraying takes one to two days for a typical house, with no openings removed and no making good at all.

Questions people ask

Do I need to be at home?

Someone needs to let us in and be available at the end for the handover and hardware demonstration. You do not need to take the whole job off work.

Do I need to clear the rooms?

Move ornaments and anything fragile from windowsills, and give us about a metre of clear working space. We move and cover furniture.

What about scaffolding?

Most first floor work is done from ladders and towers. Where scaffold is needed it is priced in the quote, not added later.

Can the job be phased?

Yes. Splitting a house across two visits is common and we hold the quoted specification for the second phase.
