Timber windows

The heritage and premium choice

For period properties, conservation areas and premium new-builds, nothing matches the character of real timber. We fit engineered hardwood casements and sliding sashes with slim 14mm double glazing across the South West.

Engineered laminated hardwood is far more dimensionally stable than solid timber — it resists warping in the wet Devon and Cornwall climate, holds factory paint longer, and accepts slim double-glazed units without compromising sightlines.

Process

  1. Free on-site survey covering species, finish, glazing-bar pattern and sightlines.
  2. Written specification and itemised quote, with drawings if needed for planning or LBC.
  3. Bespoke manufacture in engineered hardwood (typically 8–12 week lead time).
  4. Installation by our in-house team, respecting surrounding plaster and stonework.
  5. FENSA certificate and 10-year workmanship guarantee on completion.

Existing timber windows still solid?

If your frames are structurally sound, on-site spraying and refinishing is often the most heritage-friendly route — like-for-like recoats rarely need consent.

Frequently asked

How long do modern timber windows last?

Engineered hardwood windows with factory-applied microporous paint last 60+ years with light maintenance — repainting every 8–10 years on south-facing aspects. We provide a 10-year workmanship guarantee and 20 years on sealed units.

How much do timber windows cost vs uPVC?

Typically 80–150% more than equivalent uPVC. A standard hardwood casement runs £1,200–£2,000 per opening fitted in the South West, vs £550–£900 for uPVC.

Are timber windows good for conservation areas?

Yes — timber is usually the conservation officer's preferred material. We work on Grade II listed and conservation-area properties across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset and supply documentation for your Listed Building Consent application.

Hardwood or softwood?

We recommend engineered hardwood (typically European oak, accoya or sapele) for all new windows. Softwood is cheaper upfront but needs significantly more maintenance in the wet South West climate.

How much maintenance do timber windows need?

Very little with a factory microporous finish. Expect a light sand and recoat every 8–10 years on exposed elevations, every 12–15 years on sheltered ones. Our spraying team can do this on site without removing the frames.

What's the lead time on bespoke timber?

Typically 8–12 weeks from order to delivery on engineered hardwood. We agree installation dates around manufacture and never take a deposit without confirmed dates in writing.
