Door spraying

uPVC door spraying gives a tired or dated door a new colour without taking it out of the frame. If the door still opens, closes and locks properly, a specialist 2-pack coating applied on site can change a white, cream or faded front door to anthracite grey, black, a heritage green or any RAL shade you choose.

We are a family-run spraying and window team based in Cranbrook near Exeter, working across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. This page covers which doors suit spraying, how the work is done on the day, and when replacing the door is the more sensible choice.

Which doors can be sprayed

The same coating we use on uPVC windows works on uPVC front and back doors, French doors and the frames of patio doors. Doing the doors at the same visit as the windows gives the whole front of the house one matched colour, which is often the reason people ask about door spraying in the first place.

Spraying is a finish, not a repair. It suits doors that are structurally sound but look wrong: yellowed white panels, a colour that no longer fits the house, or frames that have gone chalky in the sun.

  • uPVC front doors and back doors
  • French doors and their frames
  • Patio door frames and outer frames
  • Side panels, toplights and the surrounding frame
  • Matching windows, fascias and soffits at the same visit

Composite doors

Composite doors are built differently from uPVC doors, with a moulded skin over an insulated core. Whether a coating is suitable depends on the type of skin and its condition, so we look at a composite door at the survey before saying whether spraying is the right answer. If it is not, we will tell you rather than quote for a finish that will not last.

How door spraying works on the day

The door and frame are cleaned and degreased so the coating can bond. Glass, seals, letterplates, handles and the surrounding brickwork or render are masked off, and the floor is protected inside and out. The surface is then keyed and the colour is applied in thin coats on site.

Because the door stays in place, there is no removal, no making good around the frame and no wait for a new door to be made. Spraying jobs are typically completed in one to two days, depending on how many doors and windows are being done together.

Choosing a colour

Any RAL colour is available, including Anthracite Grey 7016, which is one of the most requested shades. Dark colours suit modern houses and contrast well with white render; softer greens, greys and creams often sit better on older stone and brick. If you are unsure, we can bring colour samples to the survey so you can see them against the house in daylight.

Spray or replace the door?

Spraying makes sense when the door is sound and the only problem is how it looks. If the door has dropped, the locks are failing, the panels are cracked or you want a different style altogether, a new door is the better long-term answer. We fit replacement windows as our main service and can talk through both options at one free survey, so you are not paying to refresh a door that needs replacing.

Questions people ask

Can you spray a composite door?

It depends on the door. Composite doors have a moulded skin rather than a uPVC face, so we inspect the skin and its condition at the survey and only recommend spraying if the coating will bond and last.

How long before I can use the door?

The door stays in place throughout, and we tell you on the day how long to leave it before normal use. Spraying jobs are typically completed in one to two days depending on how much is being sprayed.

Can the door and windows be sprayed the same colour?

Yes. Spraying the door and windows at the same visit is the easiest way to get one matched colour across the front of the house, and the frames, fascias and soffits can be done at the same time.

Can you spray a patio door?

Yes, the frames of uPVC patio doors and French doors can be sprayed on site in the same coating we use on windows.
