Sash Window Replacements
Hardwood and timber-effect sliding sash windows for South West period properties.
Period looks, modern performance
Replacement sliding sash windows preserve the character of Georgian and Victorian properties while delivering the thermal performance you'd expect from a modern A-rated unit. We supply engineered hardwood and timber-effect uPVC options across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset.
Every sash we fit is made to measure for your opening — there's no such thing as a stock size on a 150-year-old townhouse. We survey in person, agree sightlines, glazing-bar pattern and finish in writing, and only then place the order with our joinery partner.
Process
- Free on-site survey — we measure every opening individually and discuss period-correct detailing.
- Written, itemised quote with hardwood and timber-effect options side by side.
- Bespoke manufacture (typically 6–10 week lead time on engineered hardwood).
- Installation by our in-house team with minimal disruption to surrounding plaster and stonework.
- Final inspection, FENSA certificate and 10-year workmanship guarantee.
Sashes still solid but tired?
If your existing timber sashes are structurally sound, our on-site spraying service can refinish them in any heritage colour for a fraction of full replacement cost — usually without needing consent.

Frequently asked
What's the difference between a sash and a casement window?
Sash windows slide vertically (sometimes horizontally). Casements are hinged on the side and open outwards. Most Georgian and Victorian South West properties were built with sliding sashes; most 1930s+ homes use casements.
Can sash windows be double glazed?
Yes. Modern sash window units use slim 14mm sealed units that preserve the original sightlines while delivering full A-rated thermal performance. You don't have to choose between heritage looks and energy efficiency anymore.
How much do replacement sash windows cost?
Hardwood double-glazed sliding sashes typically cost £1,800–£3,200 per opening fitted in the South West, depending on size, timber species and finish. uPVC sash-effect units are around 40–50% cheaper but rarely accepted in conservation areas.
How long do sash windows last?
Properly maintained hardwood sash windows last 60+ years. Engineered timber units we supply come with a 10-year guarantee on workmanship and a 20-year guarantee on the sealed units.
Spring-balanced or weighted cord sashes?
Spring balances are slimmer, lower maintenance and the standard choice for new sashes. Weighted cords are traditional and what most conservation officers prefer for Grade II listed properties — both are available.
Do you fit sash windows in conservation areas?
Yes — we regularly work in conservation areas across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset and supply drawings and specifications to support any planning or Listed Building Consent application.
