Agate Grey Windows and Heritage Colours
A softer palette for the whole frontage, with new frames or a colour change to sound existing windows.
Agate grey windows offer a lighter alternative to dark anthracite or black. This page brings agate grey, Chartwell green, sage green and cream into one heritage-palette comparison, with white uPVC as a useful reference. The aim is to choose a coherent finish for the property, not to create a different specification for every colour name.
Dual Finish supplies replacement uPVC and aluminium windows and sprays sound existing frames on site. We are a family-run team based in Cranbrook near Exeter, covering Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. The condition of your current windows determines which route makes sense; the palette can then be considered alongside the frame style and the surrounding walls.
Agate grey against white and darker grey
The existing colour range identifies agate grey as RAL 7038. It is much lighter than anthracite grey and gives the frame a less pronounced outline. Against pale render, compare a sample with the existing white frame rather than assuming every light grey will read the same way. Against brick or stone, view it beside the actual wall rather than on a screen.
White uPVC windows remain a straightforward option where you want the frame to recede into a light frontage or match windows that are staying. Agate grey is a colour choice rather than a change in opening style: the frame can still be a standard or flush casement according to the design selected.
Chartwell green and sage green windows
Green shades create a different relationship with planting, painted walls and doors from either grey or white. Chartwell green and sage are useful starting points when discussing a softer frontage, but a colour name alone is not a complete specification. Ask to see the actual sample and record the selected finish rather than relying on the name used in an online photograph.
For existing frames, the spraying service works to RAL colours. For new uPVC, the available factory foil or colour finish depends on the selected frame. Confirm the precise product and finish in the quote. If new and retained windows will sit next to each other, compare both samples together before approving the colour.
Cream uPVC windows and warm-coloured walls
Cream gives another alternative to bright white where the building already has warmer painted details. Consider the sills, door, gutters and surrounding masonry as well as the frame. A colour that looks restrained on a small sample can have a stronger effect when repeated around every opening.
Keep the comparison manageable: view cream, agate grey and your current white together in daylight, then narrow the choice. Different rooms and elevations may show a finish differently, so look at the street-facing and shaded sides of the house rather than judging from one photograph.
A palette is separate from the window profile
A flush casement closes level with the outside frame; a standard casement has a stepped outline. Those profile differences can alter the appearance as much as the colour. Compare the opening pattern, bars and proportions before treating a heritage shade as a substitute for the right frame style.
New uPVC and aluminium offer different sightlines, and not every finish is available in every system. At survey, discuss which openings are being replaced and which remain. Agree the frame material, opening arrangement and finish together, so the order is for a complete design rather than just a colour label.
Spray existing white frames or replace?
If the frames open, close, lock and seal properly, an on-site respray changes their appearance without removing them. The existing spraying process uses cleaning, surface preparation and masking before a specialist coating is applied. Glass, seals and nearby surfaces are protected during the work.
If the windows have failing mechanisms, misted units or other functional problems, a colour change does not resolve those faults. Ask about repair or replacement first. New coloured frames may be appropriate where the windows need replacing anyway, while spraying can keep sound retained frames visually consistent with the new ones.
Agreeing the finish before work starts
Bring photographs of the whole frontage to the colour discussion and identify anything that must remain unchanged. A heritage colour name describes the shade, not a performance or approval claim.
The free survey and written quote are the place to agree which faces will be finished and what stays white inside. Record the chosen sample or colour reference and the openings included. That makes the decision clear whether the project is a set of new windows, a respray, or a combination of both.
Questions people ask
Is agate grey the same as anthracite grey?
No. Agate grey is RAL 7038 and is much lighter; anthracite grey is RAL 7016 and gives a darker outline.
Can white windows be sprayed a heritage colour?
Sound frames can be sprayed on site. Select the actual colour sample and confirm the reference and faces included in the quote.
