Aluminium casements give the thinnest sightlines of any common window material. Where a uPVC frame needs bulk for stiffness, aluminium is strong enough to be slender, so the same opening lets in noticeably more light and the frame almost disappears from inside the room.

They are popular on contemporary houses, barn conversions and homes replacing old steel windows, and on seafront properties where owners want clean lines and a durable finish.

What aluminium casements cost

Across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset, slim sightline aluminium casements typically cost around £950 to £1,600 per opening fitted. That sits above uPVC at roughly £550 to £900 and below engineered hardwood at £1,200 to £2,000. The price covers survey, manufacture, fitting, making good and certification.

Colour and finish

Frames are powder coated in the factory in almost any RAL shade, and dual colour is available, so the outside can match the render while the inside matches the room. Heritage greys and black suit period conversions; brighter shades suit modern builds.

Salt air attacks hardware before it attacks frames. Within a mile of the coast we fit marine grade stainless friction stays and locking gear as standard, and we recommend an occasional fresh water rinse of frames on the most exposed elevations. Done that way, aluminium is one of the best choices for Cornish and Devon seafronts.

Thermal performance

Older aluminium had a reputation for cold frames and condensation. Modern systems use a thermal break between the inner and outer sections, and paired with A rated argon filled glazing they meet current building regulations comfortably.

Opening styles and hardware

Aluminium casements can be side hung, top hung or fixed, and combinations such as a fixed centre pane between two side openers are common on wide openings. Friction stays with egress settings let upstairs windows open wide enough to act as a fire escape route, which building regulations require on certain bedroom windows. Restrictors can be fitted where children are in the house. Handles come in finishes to suit the frame colour, including black, satin and brushed options, and every opening is specified with multi point locking.
