How to Choose a Window Spraying Company

Window spraying has grown quickly, and so has the number of firms offering it. Most finished jobs look similar on day one. The difference shows after a couple of winters, when poorly prepared or cheaply coated frames start to chalk, peel or mark.

This checklist is the one we would use if we were choosing a sprayer ourselves. Use it on us, and on anyone else you are comparing.

Ask what coating system they use

A durable finish on uPVC needs a coating designed for it. We use a premium two pack system, which cures hard and bonds properly to the prepared surface. Be wary of anyone vague about the product or who talks about ordinary paint.

Ask how they prepare the frames

If preparation is described in one sentence, the job will probably be done in one morning, and it will show.

• Thorough cleaning and degreasing to remove silicone and grime
• Keying the surface so the coating can grip
• Careful masking of glass, seals, brickwork and hardware
• Checking and dealing with any failed seals or damage first

Ask what the guarantee covers

A written guarantee should state how long it lasts and what it covers. Ours is 10 years. A short or verbal guarantee suggests the firm does not expect the finish to last.

Ask whether they will tell you not to spray

An honest sprayer will say when frames are too far gone. If the units are misted, the frames warped or the locks failing, spraying only puts off an inevitable replacement. Because we also fit replacement windows, we can recommend either without bias.

Check local experience and coverage

Get the price in writing

A proper quote itemises windows, doors and any other items, confirms the colour reference and states the guarantee. Compare like with like, not just the total.

Red flags when comparing sprayers

Be cautious of a price given over the phone without seeing the frames, a firm that cannot name its coating, no written guarantee, or pressure to book the same day. Also be wary of anyone who says every window can be sprayed regardless of condition. A proper survey looks at the frames, the glass and the hardware, and it takes a little time. The best sign of a good sprayer is a willingness to show you finished work that is several years old, not just last week's job.
