Black uPVC windows give a house a strong, graphic outline, and you can get them in two ways: new black uPVC or aluminium frames, or a black finish sprayed onto your existing white uPVC windows. Which suits you depends on the condition of the windows you have now.

We are a family-run team based in Cranbrook near Exeter, fitting and spraying windows across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. Below we cover the choice between black uPVC and black aluminium, the common worries about black frames, and what moves the price.

Black uPVC or black aluminium windows?

Black uPVC windows are the usual choice for a straight swap of white casements: they are cost-effective, warm and low-maintenance, and they can be made in a flush or standard casement profile. Black aluminium windows have slimmer powder-coated frames, so more glass and less frame, which suits contemporary extensions, wide openings and anyone after a crisp, minimal line.

Both come with A-rated glazing and multi-point locking. The survey is where we look at the openings, the style of the house and your budget and suggest which material fits best.

  • Black uPVC: the cost-effective route to a black frame
  • Black aluminium: slimmer sightlines and more glass
  • Black outside with white inside on new frames
  • Matching black doors, fascias and garage doors by spraying

Spraying white windows black

If your current white uPVC windows open, close and seal properly, they do not need replacing just to change colour. We clean and key the frames, mask the glass, seals and surrounding walls, and apply a specialist 2-pack coating in thin layers on site. A black or any RAL colour is available, and front doors, French doors and patio door frames can be sprayed at the same visit.

Spraying is a finish rather than a repair, so if the survey shows failing hinges, blown units or dropped frames, we will say so and price the repair or replacement instead.

Black uPVC windows problems: what to know

The most common worry is heat. Dark colours absorb more heat in strong sun than white, so a properly made coloured frame or a quality spray coating matters far more than it would on a white window. Cheap paint applied by brush is the usual cause of the peeling and patchy black frames people see on other houses.

Black also shows dust, pollen and salt spray more readily, so it needs a wipe-down a few times a year, particularly near the coast. And a black frame makes the outline of every window stand out, so it suits houses where the windows are well proportioned; on a mixed elevation, anthracite grey can be the gentler choice.

Black uPVC windows price and cost

The price of black uPVC windows depends on the number and size of openings, the frame profile, the glass and access, and coloured frames usually cost more than standard white. Black aluminium costs more again but gives slimmer frames. Spraying existing frames black avoids the cost of new windows altogether when the frames are sound.

We give a free survey and a written quote per opening, and we are happy to price both spraying and replacement side by side so you can compare like for like.

Questions people ask

Do black uPVC windows fade?

A properly made coloured frame or a quality 2-pack spray coating is designed to hold its colour. Problems with fading and peeling usually come from ordinary paint brushed onto uPVC, which does not bond properly.

Are black uPVC windows more expensive than white?

Coloured frames usually cost more than standard white. If your current white frames are sound, spraying them black can be the lower-cost route, and we can quote both options at one survey.

Can you spray just the outside of my windows black?

Yes. We can spray the outside only, so the frames stay white inside, or spray both faces if you prefer.

Should I choose black or anthracite grey?

Black gives the strongest contrast; anthracite grey (RAL 7016) reads as nearly black from the street but is softer up close. We can bring samples to the survey so you can see both against the house.
