Aluminium window spraying gives sound aluminium frames a new finish without taking them out. Aluminium windows and doors last well structurally, but their powder-coated surface can dull, chalk or go patchy over the years, and older bronze, brown or white finishes can make a home look dated. Respraying on site renews the colour, in the original shade or any RAL colour you choose.

We are a family-run window and spraying team based in Cranbrook near Exeter, and we spray uPVC and aluminium windows, doors and cladding across Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. This page explains how aluminium spraying works, what it suits and when new frames make more sense.

Why aluminium frames need refinishing

Aluminium itself does not rot or warp, which is why so many homes and commercial buildings still have frames that open and close properly decades after fitting. The weak point is the surface. Sunlight slowly breaks down the original coating, salt air on the coast speeds the process up, and the result is a chalky film, faded patches on the sunniest elevation or a colour that simply no longer suits the building.

Because the frame underneath is still sound, replacing it purely for the colour throws away a working window. Spraying keeps the frame and replaces only the part that has worn out: the finish.

How aluminium window spraying works

The work happens on site with the windows in place. Every frame is cleaned and degreased to remove dirt, salt and oxidation. Glass, seals, brickwork and surrounding surfaces are masked off. The surface is then keyed and primed so the new coating has something to bond to, and a specialist 2-pack coating is sprayed on in your chosen colour.

Preparation matters more on aluminium than on almost any other surface, because a smooth powder coat gives a poor grip if it is not properly keyed and primed. That preparation is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that peels.

  • Clean and degrease every frame
  • Mask glass, seals and surrounding surfaces
  • Key and prime the existing coating
  • Spray a specialist 2-pack coating in any RAL colour

Aluminium door spraying

The same process works for aluminium doors: front doors, patio doors, bi-fold frames and French door frames. Doors take the most handling of any part of a building, so a worn or scratched finish shows quickly, and a resprayed door can be matched to the windows so the whole elevation reads as one colour.

Handles and hardware are masked or removed while the frame is sprayed, and the door stays hung throughout, so the opening remains secure.

Choosing a colour

Because we work to any RAL colour, the choice is about the building rather than a short list. Anthracite grey is the most requested change, turning tired bronze or white aluminium into a crisp modern frame. Black, agate grey and softer heritage shades are popular too, and commercial clients often match a brand colour. If you are unsure, we can bring colour samples to the survey so you can see them against your walls in daylight.

Spray or replace?

Spraying is the right answer when the frames still open, lock and seal properly and the problem is the look. It is not a cure for failed mechanisms. If units have misted, frames are draughty or locks are failing, replacement may be the better long-term choice, and we will quote both routes where both genuinely apply.

Spraying also avoids the disturbance of replacement: nothing is taken out, so plaster, reveals and sills are left alone and the home stays secure throughout.

Homes and commercial buildings

Aluminium is common on shop fronts, offices and schools as well as homes, and we spray both. For commercial buildings, out-of-hours access can be arranged so the work fits around trading. For homes, the job is usually planned around the weather so the coating goes on in suitable conditions.

Questions people ask

Can aluminium windows be sprayed?

Yes. Sound aluminium windows can be cleaned, keyed, primed and sprayed on site with a specialist 2-pack coating in any RAL colour.

Do you spray aluminium doors as well?

Yes. We spray aluminium front doors, patio doors, bi-fold frames and French door frames, and can match them to the windows.

Do the windows have to be removed?

No. The frames stay in place and the surrounding glass, seals and walls are masked off.

Should I spray or replace old aluminium windows?

Spray if the frames still work and seal well; consider replacement if they are draughty, misted or mechanically failing.
