Broken Window Hinges and Handles

A broken window hinge or handle can almost always be repaired without replacing the window: friction hinges, handles and locking gear are serviceable parts, and fitting the right replacement usually restores a window that drops, sticks, will not lock or will not stay open. It only becomes a replacement job when the frame itself is failing.

Signs the hinges have failed

Most uPVC casements hang on friction stays, the sliding metal arms at the top and bottom of the opening. They carry the weight of the glass, so as they wear the sash sinks and everything else, including the lock, starts to misalign.

• The sash drops and catches the frame as it closes
• The window swings shut on its own or will not stay open
• You have to lift the sash to get it to lock
• Daylight or draughts show at one corner when closed
• Visible rust, bent arms or a grinding noise as it opens

Signs the handle or lock is the problem

A handle that spins without engaging, feels loose, or turns only part way usually points to a worn spindle or a broken gearbox inside the sash rather than the handle itself. If the handle turns but the window will not pull tight, the locking cams may no longer line up with their keeps, which is often a hinge problem showing up at the lock. Forcing a stiff handle is the fastest way to snap the mechanism, so it is worth getting it checked before it fails completely.

Why hinges and handles wear out

Heavy sealed units, windows that are opened wide in wind, and hardware that has never been cleaned or lubricated all shorten the life of friction stays. On the coast, salt air corrodes cheaper steel quickly. Stays that were undersized for the weight of the sash when the window was made will fail repeatedly until the correct size is fitted.

What a repair involves

The sash is supported, the old stays unscrewed and matched by length, type and weight rating, and new ones fitted into the existing positions. The sash is then adjusted so it sits evenly, closes onto its gaskets and locks without effort. Handles and gearboxes are matched to the backset and spindle length of the existing hardware. Done properly, the window should feel like new again.

It is worth having every opening checked at the same visit, because hardware of the same age tends to fail within a short time of each other.

When a hinge problem is really a frame problem

If new hinges do not fix a dropped sash, the screw fixings may have nothing solid to bite into, or the frame may be twisting. Rotten timber around a wooden casement, or a uPVC frame that has lost its reinforcement, cannot hold hardware reliably. That is the point where replacement is worth pricing alongside repair, and we will show you both options in writing.

Simple care that extends hardware life

Wipe the tracks of friction stays and apply a light lubricant once or twice a year, clean away grit from the lock cams, and avoid leaving windows wide open in strong wind. These small habits make a real difference, particularly in exposed coastal spots.
