Double Glazing in Plymouth

We offer double glazing in Plymouth: new uPVC and aluminium windows, repairs to sound frames, and on-site spraying to change the colour of existing uPVC. Every job starts with a free survey and a written quote per opening, so you can compare replacing, repairing and spraying before deciding.

Plymouth is Devon's most populous settlement, a port city between the Plym and the Tamar that has its own unitary council. Its homes, its weather and its planning rules are all a little different from the rest of the county, and the sections below look at what that means for your windows.

Plymouth's homes and what they need

Across the city, around a third of homes are terraced and roughly three in ten are semi-detached, with detached houses in the minority. Around the city centre it is different again: flats and maisonettes make up the majority, and terraces most of the rest. That mix matters, because terraced streets often need several matching windows on a narrow frontage, while flats raise questions of access and who is responsible for the frames.

Much of the centre was rebuilt after the Blitz to the 1943 Plan for Plymouth, and more than a thousand council houses a year went up through the 1950s on garden-city lines. Many of those post-war homes now have their first or second generation of white uPVC, which is exactly the kind of frame that suits either a like-for-like replacement or a colour respray.

Windows for wet, salty weather

Plymouth is wetter and milder than most of England, with Atlantic depressions bringing rain more often and more heavily than in the South East. Homes facing the Sound or the estuaries also take wind-driven spray. Over the years that weather fades white frames, perishes gaskets and finds any weak seal around a window.

For replacements, that means paying attention to sealing at the survey. For sound frames that have simply faded, an on-site 2-pack respray restores the colour without new windows. And where the frames are fine but the glass has misted, replacing the sealed unit alone can be enough.

• uPVC and aluminium replacement windows, A-rated glazing
• Casement and flush casement styles for terraced frontages
• Window repairs: sealed units, hinges, handles and gaskets
• On-site spraying of sound uPVC frames in any RAL colour

The city council

Planning in Plymouth is handled by Plymouth City Council, not Devon County Council.

Landlords and rented homes

More than one in five Plymouth homes is privately rented, and around the city centre the figure is over two in five. For a landlord, a tired set of white frames between tenancies is often better sprayed than replaced, while failed units and broken hinges are worth repairing before they become a complaint. We can quote all three routes at one visit.
